Nonapeptide-1 (Melanostatine-5) is a synthetic peptide that acts as a potent and specific antagonist of the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes, competitively inhibiting α-MSH binding to block downstream signaling that activates tyrosinase and melanin production. With a molecular weight of 1206.52 g/mol, it effectively reduces melanin production in melanocytes by decreasing expression of MC1R and key melanogenic proteins, leading to significant reduction in skin pigmentation for studying hyperpigmentation disorders. It slows melanoma tumor growth through MC1R inhibition, and shows potential in pain research as MC1R antagonism reduces response to inflammatory pain in animal models through expression in brain regions involved in pain perception.
