Matrixyl (Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4) is a synthetic lipopeptide consisting of a palmitoyl chain attached to the pentapeptide sequence Lys-Thr-Thr-Lys-Ser, designed to enhance skin penetration and stability while mimicking a fragment of type I procollagen to stimulate fibroblast collagen production. With a molecular weight of 802.05 g/mol, it stimulates concentration-dependent collagen synthesis by self-assembling into nanostructures that optimally interact with fibroblasts, prioritizing collagen production over cell division. In vivo studies show it reduces wrinkle depth and thickness, improves skin firmness, accelerates wound closure by modulating fibroblast activity, and reduces expression of scarring-associated proteins like alpha-smooth muscle actin and connective tissue growth factor.
